Caroline spoke about her calling and how important it is to see it as "a cloak God lays on your shoulders. Don't confuse calling with who you are. It might change... it may bring attacks". Remembering that the attacks are against her calling/current role not against her personality helps her to stay calm in charged situations. Another key point was about being consistent in our behaviour - so that our conduct fits who we say we are. People are watching us to see if our faith makes a difference in our lives. The gospel needs to be "absorbed into our being." She also encouraged workplace fellowship groups and urged us to "be bold in your fellowship - form one where you are." She is part of a cross-party weekly prayer fellowship which provides support and encouragement and demonstrates that God is bigger than any one party! Read the results from the focus groups. Thanks to all who took part and contact CMS if you want to get involved in this initiative. A useful framework for Christian fellowships, churches or other workplace groups. Is there consistency between the way you behave at work and the way you behave at home/church...? How can you support and encourage each other to put your Christian principles into practice? Principles? "Many of us are faced in our everyday lives with dilemmas... just as critical to maintaining the integrity of Christian witness. Temptations abound, particularly in the workplace. Corporate culture regards 'whistleblowing' as a sin; God regards condoning evil as a sin..." Read more Anita Roddick suggested "...business should assume moral leadership in society. It has to shift its emphasis from the material to the spiritual, connecting with people's sense of meaning and purpose..." More... Great book full of testimonies, points of action, prayers, poems, things to consider which has been widely applauded by those in government and key church leaders for the resource it provides for informing people about the multiple abuse of trafficking for sexual exploitation. Read the press release. God at Work - by Ken Costa (Vice Chairman of UBS). The WorkNet Partnership provide resources for Christians at work. One of Geoff Shattock's Wake Up Calls asked how we wanted to be treated: "Would you prefer people to settle with you rather than hold grudges? To build ethical, affirming, committed relationships and be transparently truthful in their dealings, not going for the pound of flesh but even taking into account your demands?" Jesus tells us what we need to do in Matt 7:12. Why not register for the weekly email and prepare to be challenged. Below are copies/extracts of the recent CABE papers as well as other resources linked to the Principles including a great mini guide to Trust developed by Career Innovation and the Relationships Foundation, and an extract from Peter Shaw’s book “The Four V’s of Leadership” which contains many examples of how the Principles have been applied by different people across a wide range of organisations - provoking thought and action! If you have other material which you would like us to share with others relating to Principles at Work please contact us. Extract from Jim Wright’s article “Reclaiming business for the kingdom of God” (Faith In Business Quarterly 10:2 www.fibq.org) “The question is not whether we have values but which ones really guide our behaviour. What guides us when it comes to deciding between acceptable and unacceptable business practices? By being principled about our day-to-day decisions, God builds our character and it becomes easier to behave rightly when the bigger challenges come along. The same applies to organisational values. There are few companies today that do not have a list of values and a vision statement. But they are of little benefit unless they affect everything that people in the organisation do every day of the week. In many companies the values have minimal effect on how people behave – which can generate cynicism and lack of trust. Christians have a great opportunity to use the organisational values to engage conversation with our colleagues at all levels about what they mean and how they might affect behaviour if really put into practice. This is not easy.”Hugh Kay Memorial Lecture 2007
